Introduction

ITAMI International Craft Exhibition started in 1998, and marks its 25th time this year. It has produced a number of promising artists. After a strict judging process, the selected works will be exhibited at the Itami City Museum of Art, History and Culture. We look forward to encountering wonderful works of art again this year.
As the birthplace of Sake, the city of Itami has developed into a place of Sake brewery, fostering its culture in strong connection to its environment. In June 2020, “Itami Morohaku” and “Nada no Ki-ippon” ~ Kansai Sakes beloved in Edo~ was designated as a Japan Heritage and the Sake culture in Itami is seeing a further upsurge in recent years. ITAMI International Craft Exhibition ‘Shuki Shuhaidai’ is an international competition of craftworks giving focus on Japanese Sake and it is held in the city of Itami. ‘Shuki’ to enjoy scenes of toasting with Japanese Sake and ‘Shuhaidai’ as instruments to stage the joyful moments with Sake – we look forward to entries with new and unexpected inspirations that bring fascination and tastefulness for the culture of Sake drinking.

What is Shuki and Shuhaidai?

The theme of the competition this year is ‘Shuki Shuhaidai’. Shuki is a Japanese collective noun that stands for cup (O-choko) and bottle (Tokkuri) for drinking Japanese liquor, Sake. Shuhaidai is not only a platform-like stand on top of which Shuki is placed, but may also be interpreted as all elements that stage the scene of Sake drinking such as decorative arrangements, wrappings, or as a transport tool for enjoying sake elsewhere.
We are eager to receive entries in this competition that are worthy of drinking Sake. Not wine or whisky, but Sake. Traditionally, the drinking of Sake has been an important ritual rooted in the spirit of camaraderie in Japan, which has led to the development of a wide range of styles of ‘Sake cups’. Sake can be served hot, room temperature or chilled, so different types of Shuki are made to suit different drinking styles.
Sake cups are made from a wide range of materials, from coarse to fine, including ceramics, metal, glass, wood and lacquer. The characteristics of each material can also influence the atmosphere of the party.
Sake has such a long tradition, but suggestions for new styles are welcome! Please use your imagination and freely come up with new styles for sake parties that sake lovers will find enjoyable. We are looking forward to seeing your creations that will allow us to “taste and enjoy sake” in a modern way.

Why do we focus on Sake?

Itami City, where this exhibition is held, is known in Japan as the birthplace of Sake, and has been developing for over 400 years as a city of Sake brewing. Under such an environment, the city has been fostering its own culture around the idea of drinking Sake. Many people from Sake breweries of Itami City are highly interested in this exhibition, and also offer essential support in making the exhibition possible.
We look forward to receiving works with vivid inspiration that propose and create a new environment for the people of contemporary society in discovering new joy in drinking Sake.
